Wheel of Fortune - The World's Largest Playable Wheel

When Sony Pictures Television and CBS set out to launch a new season of America's most-watched game show, the moment demanded more than a premiere — it demanded a landmark. Wheel of Fortune was introducing Ryan Seacrest as host alongside the beloved Vanna White, and the brief was to mark that transition with an installation befitting the show's legacy: transform the Pacific Park Ferris Wheel on the Santa Monica Pier into the largest game of Wheel of Fortune ever built, and turn a season premiere into a national media moment.

  • No one had ever attempted to make a Ferris Wheel recognizably, functionally “read” as the Wheel of Fortune wheel — a constantly rotating, circular structure with complex geometry and shifting lighting conditions that resists conventional projection mapping.

  • The concept called for genuine interactivity: a wheel guests could actually spin and play, a gamification feat never before achieved on a Ferris Wheel anywhere in the world.

  • The installation had to be engineered, tested, and installed against a fixed, non-negotiable date — the season's September 9th premiere.

Solution

EPM Consulting Group served as project manager on the engagement, holding the line between an unforgiving premiere date and a technically unprecedented build. That meant coordinating directly with Sony Pictures Television and CBS on creative sign-off, managing the relationship with Pacific Park and the Santa Monica Pier venue, and running point on production scheduling with National Experiential, the specialized experiential-technology partner engineering the physical installation.

The technical build itself — an 85-foot custom mesh screen system engineered to the Ferris Wheel's unique structure, high-powered laser projectors with real-time tracking to hold imagery steady on a moving wheel, and first-of-its-kind gamification technology allowing the wheel to function as an actual playable game — was executed by National Experiential. EPM Consulting Group's job was to make sure every stakeholder, every vendor, and every moving piece converged on one working installation, on one immovable date.

On premiere night, the Santa Monica Pier became the site of the largest playable Wheel of Fortune wheel ever built — and two genuine industry firsts: the first Ferris Wheel projection mapping in the United States, and the first gamified Ferris Wheel mapping anywhere in the world. The activation drew extensive media coverage, including ABC7, and generated substantial organic social sharing as guests captured the illuminated wheel spinning over the pier. Most importantly, it did exactly what it set out to do: it gave Ryan Seacrest's first season alongside Vanna White a launch worthy of the show's legacy.
